Be a Role Model for your Daughter

Let your daughter see you being active, talk about sports you played as a child, and be active together!

Teach your Daughter Fundamental Physical Skills

Plant the athletic seed early. Fundamental athletic skills (catching, throwing, running, etc) will help her be successful when she starts playing sports, as well as just playing games on the playground at school. Click to learn the skills you should introduce to your daughter, as well as activities and games you can play to reinforce the skills.

Take your Daughter to the Local High School Girl’s Games

Watch female sports, learn about female athletes and show your daughter that you take girls’ sports as seriously as boys’ sports. Click to learn about Influencial Women Athletes and the History of Women in Sports.

Introduce your Daughter to a variety of sports

Make sure you expose your child to many sports so that you can find a sport that is a good “fit.” Things you should think about: team or individual sport, a lot of running or limited running, indoor or outdoor, physical contact or not, body type. There are a lot of factors to consider and a lot of options available, so keep trying new activities until you find one that fits well with your daughter.

Be Active Everyday

Make being active just a part of your family’s daily life. Make it your lifestyle.

Make sure your daughter knows that winning and losing doesn’t equal success and failure.

At the end of the day, sports are just games and your love isn’t tied to a win.

Encourage Her to Be Healthy and Competitive – and Tell her How Proud You Are of Her

Be sure to give positive reinforcement so your daughter feels good about herself. Try to focus on values she learns from sports participation (hard-work and determination), not only the physical skills.

Don’t make comparisons to other girls.

Respect your daughter’s development. Every girl matures and develops at their own rate. Allow your daughter to set goals for herself see her own progress and achievements.

Make it FUN
